THE INDEPENDENTS formed 1990-91 in Florence SC originally
under the name Brother Rude doin some kinda elvis meets misfits thing .
I came up with the name change THE INDEPENDENTS and logo design being the
new drummer, the rest of the guys the whole horror ska concept. I moved
in with a few of the guys in this shitty trailer park with all my possessions
in my car and various places. After that all of us rented a house for $350
a month which included a small front and back yard, driveway and garage,
1 and a half bathrooms, 2 living rooms, dining room, kitchen, and 3 bedrooms
real cheap to live there great deal. Many memorable moments embedded in
the soul of the place. the cops just loved us so did the neighbors such
outstanding citizens we were. Punk party house. Chris put on shows at various
venues that could be rented out so generally made our own fun. I remember
the lady who rented the place to me and Willy B (under conditions that the
house was up for sale) came for a surprize visit after a allnight party
we had. I answered the door very hung over with a charged up high bi hawk
mohawk with a thick dog collar around my neck a few kids passed out behind
me on the floor she screamed and freaked out and stormed off the porch.
She had to come back later that day to show the place we had to take down
all the posters and everything shes was mortified.
Long story short I left the band having a nervous breakdown from multiple
personal problems occurring at once (not with the band) got back in touch
with my folks, who I hadnt been talking to in years at the time. This reunion
then led to taking my uncle up on a previous invitation to visit in West
Chester PA. Commuting back and forth to Philly checking out jobs and schools
decided this was the next place to move and shoot for an education to make
something of myself yeah right.
The independents are still alive today they never quit. After a few years
and a few member changes, the guys had gathered a good following through
rough demos and Compilation records from coast to coast. They signed a small
indie deal with Rockduster Records and recorded their first album "In
For The Kill". It was during this time that Evil met and befriended
the bass player for the legendary Ramones, CJ Ramone. CJ got the Independents
on a few opening dates of the Ramones' Acid Eaters tour. On their way to
the first show with the Independents, Joey Ramone listened to some of the
Independents demos given to him by CJ. He really dug what he heard and within
minutes of arriving to the venue was introduced to the guys. After the shows,
Joey made an offer the guys could not refuse. He told them he wanted to
manage the band.
Joey Ramone RIP
